| A Night In Yankee Stadium |
| By Isiah Mungai May 14, 2011 On my trip to New York I decided that it would be a great idea to attend my first Major League Baseball game, and what better place than at the new Yankee Stadium. We all know that the new trend is for state of the art building costing in the hundreds of millions and Yankee Stadium is a $1.2 billion palace. My friend who I was visiting stated that it was like an airport since the outer ring is home to multiple restaurants and shops. Walking to our seats which were in the bleachers in left center field, I didn’t get the vibe that I was at a sporting event the people I saw walking around didn’t seem like they were there to watch a game as much as they were there to be seen it was best described to me as corporate. Although I had never been to the old Yankee Stadium I can only imagine that it had more of a mystic to it, more a sense of history. Derek Jeter once said tradition doesn’t change just because you moved venues. In ways he’s correct the tradition of the Yankees will always be there no matter where they call home but there a tradition of the stadium which was lost with the move. Once we got upstairs to where our seats were located the first thing I saw was a giant sports bar directly above center field which obstructed the view of the seats next to it. Luckily for the unfortunate patrons who had those seats there were three 32” flat screen TVs on the side wall. When we finally got to our seats I couldn’t have been more pleased with the location you got to see everything unfold in front of you and we were surrounded by loyal fans not dressed in suits but in Yankee gear, shirts, jersey’s, hats, a stark difference from the main concourse. We had good conversations with fans of both the Yankees and the visiting Kanas City Royals with one Yankee fan asking how many championships have the Royals won. I was surprised with how much fun I had at the game with me not being a big baseball fan, but the atmosphere in our section made this the most enjoyable time I’ve ever had at a sporting event. We even had a Yankee fan organize the wave which took 3 whole laps around the stadium before it dead off. Now I didn’t just go to Yankee Stadium for the experience I went to watch a game and unfortunately the game was over rather early as the Royals posted more runs in the second inning (6) then the Yankees did in the entire game (5). Not being an avid baseball follower it was quite enjoyable to watch a team with a good offense; the Royals doubled the Yankees hit total 16 to 8 and scored twice as many runs 11 to 5. The Royals only had two 3 and outs giving us a chance for some excitement almost every innings. Sadly with no baseball team in my hometown it won’t be soon that I can relive this experience and see if other parks around the country can bring so much excitement to a non-baseball enthusiast. I was always told baseball is more exciting to watch live then on TV and now I know it’s true. |
