U.S. Routs Tunisia
By Isiah Mungai

In their last game before the elimination round of the FIBA World Championship, the
United States came out as they have in all their games with no sense of urgency. The
92-57 can be quite deceiving if you didn’t get a chance to watch this game. After
already wrapping up the group you could tell that they were looking ahead to Monday’s
game. They came out of the first quarter, which the starters played the entirety, only
leading by 6 points. The lead stayed at 6 when the U.S scored the last 2 baskets of the
first half.

At the start of the second half Tunisia fought hard, like everyone watching the game
they could tell that the U.S was simply going through the motions and if they had only
shot better than the 28% they did this could have been a much different game.
With about half of the third quarter gone the U.S was only up by 8 points when magically
something within them clicked.  An 8-2 run pushed the lead to 55-41 after Tunisia
scored another 3 points the U.S got three pointers from Eric Gordon and Stephen Curry
to end the quarter with an 63-44 edge and the rout was on.

The lead kept increasing through the final quarter when the U.S played their best
offense scoring 29 points and their best defense holding Tunisia to only 11 points.
In yet another game Coach Krzyzewski played all 12 players at least 10 minutes with
Gordon and Russell Westbrook leading the way with 25 minutes apiece. Gordon led all
scorers with 21 points while Westbrook and Kevin Durant scored 14 points each and
Stephen Curry had 13 as the only 4 players with double digits on the U.S side. While the
winless Tunisian side had two players in double figures, Marouan Kechrid and Macram
Ben Romdhane, with 15 and 11 points respectably.

Now with 3 days of rest before their first elimination game against Angola the U.S
have a few things to clean up if they want to be the first American squad since ’94 to win
the World Championship.
