| Twins Trade Revere |
| By Sally Haase Dec. 7, 2012 Less than a week after shipping Denard Span to the Washington Nationals for Minor League pitcher Alex Meyer, the Minnesota Twins made another move; shipping their other centerfielder- Ben Revere to the Philadelphia Phillies for pitchers Vance Worley and Trevor May. The Twins are short on pitching and long on outfielders so the trade makes sense, but it was still a shock to see another fan favorite traded away. Revere brought some much needed excitement to an otherwise lethargic 2012 Twins team. You never knew what kind of acrobatics Revere would do in the outfield or on the base paths; plus his speed could turn an otherwise routine base hit into a double. And once Revere got on base, it was not unusual for him to steal second or third on consecutive pitches. The Phillies were in the market for a centerfielder and the Twins were in the market for pitching. Hopefully the trade works out well on both sides. The fan reaction for both sides was the same. Twins fans were mad that the team traded away an exciting player for two pitchers we do not know much about. Phillies fans were mad that the team could only swing a deal for Revere, a player who has yet to hit a Major League home run. Well guess what Phillies fans; Revere is not a power hitter, but if he is to slap the ball down the line, just sit back and watch him run and tell me you won’t be on your feet and cheering. Plus, Revere is only 24, the power may eventually come but as of now, his game is to get on base and be a pain for the pitchers. Worley had a great 2011 season with the Phillies but struggled in 2012 with arm issues caused by bone chips. Worley and the Twins are confident that those issues are behind him and he will join Scott Diamond in the Twins starting rotation. May is the top pitching prospect in the Phillies organization but is not Major League ready for 2013 and will likely start the year in AAA. If the Twins have a repeat season with the starting pitching issues, we could see May in the Twins rotation sooner than we think or the Twins would hope. May has the potential to be the big prize in this trade, if he can live up to the expectations. Within a week the Twins have obtained two teams top pitching prospects in their efforts to rebuild a winning ball club. Only time will tell if the Twins made a good deal with Meyer and May; judgment on Worley will be made this season, and if can get through the season without injury, it basically a win for the Twins. I just ask the Twins and Terry Ryan that if you decide to make any more moves that you think will improve the team, please try to get an established name player in return where the fans can say “oh, I’ve heard of him, he’s good” because right now you are on the verge of alienating your whole fan base. The Twins are lucky they have the All-Star Game in 2014 because that is the only reason to buy season tickets right now. |
