After the Oregon Ducks dismissed QB Jeremiah Masoli from their team
earlier this summer they have been looking for the replacement. After
heavy competition between 5th year senior Nate Costa and sophomore
Darron Thomas during fall camp, coach Chip Kelly awarded the starting
job to Darron Thomas. The 6’3” 212 pounds Thomas is much more of a
ground threat like former UofO QBs, Masoli and Dennis Dixon, while
Costa is a traditional pocket passer.
Costa seemed on his way to becoming the starter back before injuring
his knee in 2008, he seemed on his way again this year until Thomas had
a solid camp and went ahead in the depth charts. Thomas who,
redshirted last year, came into the national spot light when he had to take
over after 2 injuries and led UofO to a 3 touchdown 4th quarter against
Boise State in 2008. Even with that great performance they ended up 5
points short when the clocks hit zero.
On Thursday the day before the decision was announced Oregon held a
scrimmage, and it became apparent that Thomas was the way to go
posting far better numbers than Costa. Thomas went 14 of 23 for 125
yards and 3 touchdowns compared to Costa’s 17 of 37 for 138 yards, a
touchdown and an interception.
It seems that most fans are behind this selection as the Ducks some
being so confident with him that they have compared him to 2007
Heisman Trophy candidate Dennis Dixon. Now those are pretty big shoes
to fill down in Eugene and if Thomas can come close to doing so the
Ducks will have a great chance to repeat as conference champions.
