| What Are You Doing Terry Ryan? |
| By Sally Haase September 1, 2013 I don’t get it. I just don’t get it. After months off trade talk with the Minnesota Twins and Justin Morneau, Twins general manager Terry Ryan finally pulled the trigger on the trade talk in sending Morneau to the Pittsburgh Pirates in exchange for outfielder Alex Presley and cash or a possible player to be named later. Just what the Twins need is more outfielders. Does the team not know you can only put three fielders in the outfield? This trade could be the last straw for Twins fans after an off season of trading away their best leadoff hitter in a long time (Denard Span) and an exciting and fast outfielder (Ben Revere) for pitchers who are not even with the big league club and when Vance Worley was in the pitching rotation, he did next to nothing to help the team. Now we have a hole at first base in addition to all the holes in the starting rotation and in centerfield. Good luck finding a first baseman who hit and fielded as well as Morneau, Terry. And let me give you a hint right now, Chris Parmelee is not the answer at first base. Too many mental mistakes to be a reliable player. Maybe the Twins don’t want to be a baseball team any more, because they are looking like a AAA team right now, creating players for the rest of Major League Baseball to strengthen their rosters. All we heard when the Twins were looking for a new stadium was that they needed it to up their revenue and be competitive. Well, the team has been in Target field for three seasons now and it has been regression, not progression. You still need to have marquee players who the fans know and will still pay for a ticket to see them play even though they may see the team lose; they still get to see the name players on the field. I don’t know what the answer is, but I know of a start to get to the answer, first off fire Ron Gardenhire who is basically a waste of bench space right now. Firing Ryan could be another answer, we need someone running the Twins who wants to win, and Ryan apparently thinks that Morneau is not a necessary pillar for a winning team. Nah, he’s just a good fielding, power hitting first baseman who’s well respected in the clubhouse and is a team leader. Wait a minute, I just named all the things you want in a pillar for a successful team. Crazy. Lastly, get the Pohlad family to open up the pocket book so the team can pay their core players to stay with the team and to be able to go out and sign good and necessary players to build a winning team. It would at least show the fans that the Twins do care about them, because the trades the Twins have made have shown little regard to the fans. I’ll use the Los Angeles Angels as an example, unlike the Twins; the Angels were expected to make the playoff this season. They will not, but have they dumped salary because this season is a wash? No. Josh Hamilton is still there, so is Albert Pujols, C J Wilson, Mike Trout, and Mark Trumbo. And that core group of players will be there next season. For the Twins there core group of players next season will be Joe Mauer (if Ryan doesn’t trade him in the off season) and maybe some players from your local town team. |
