Raisman Raising Money for Lung Cancer Research |
By Sally Haase October 19, 2013 We all know someone who has been affected by cancer. In the case of Olympic gold medal winning gymnast Aly Raisman, it is her Grandmother, Nancy Raisman who was affected by lung cancer. Nancy lost her battle, but her Granddaughter is joining in the fight against the disease. Aly is the guest speaker at Uniting Against Lung Cancer “Winning Together” fundraiser gala on October 19 at Pinebrook Country Club in Weston Massachusetts. Since 2003, UALC has awarded ten million dollars to academic investigators plus another 55 million in follow-on funding. Raisman called on her famous friends and fellow Olympians to give items for the online auction, running now. Auction items include autographed memorabilia from Team USA Track & Field, Missy Franklin, Mary Lou Retton, the Fierce Five and Raisman‘s “Dancing with the Stars” co-stars Victor Ortiz and Kellie Pickler. Other items include a chance to be a Boston Red Sox bat boy or girl and tickets to a taping of late night comedy show “Chelsea Lately”. Online bidders can place bids on their items until October 17, then the items will go to the live auction at the gala. Online bidders will be able to fill out an absentee bid for the live auction to try for a winning bid on their item. Along with the money the UALC raises, the group also raises awareness about lung cancer. The common misconception about lung cancer is that it is a disease that is brought on yourself by not being able to quit your smoking habit. While many people who develop lung cancer are smokers, 15-20% of lung cancer patients never smoked, non-smokers are not immune to this type of cancer. Lung cancer is now the leading cause on cancer death in men and women and it is one of the most under funded. That is where charities like the UALC come in to get the money needed for proper research and better treatments for patients. Then, you add a celebrity like Raisman, who has been promoting the event on her social media pages on a regular basis; you can bring a lot more dollar and eyes to the event and the disease.
