| MLB Player Profile: Jose Bautista |
| By Sally Haase July 7, 2011 7,454,753 is a huge number and it is the number of votes cast this season for the Toronto Blue Jays right fielder Jose Bautista. It is a major league record for the most votes cast to a single player for the All-Star game. There could not be a better player to set that record. For the past season and a half, Bautista has torn up the league with his offensive prowess. In 2010 Bautista set a Blue Jays record with 54 home runs and he is likely to crack at least 40 home runs this season if he stays healthy. Currently Bautista’s offensive number are .331 batting average, 28 home runs and 58 RBI. Next week, Bautista will compete with David Ortiz and other American League home run hitters in the All-Star game home run derby. Bautista’s introduction to the Major Leagues would be enough to make any rookie’s head spin; he made his debut with the Baltimore Orioles and ended the season with the Pittsburgh Pirates. However in between that were the Tampa Bay Rays, Kansas City Royals, and the New York Mets. Although Bautista never put on a Mets uniform, he was on the team’s roster making Bautista the first and only Major League baseball player to be on five rosters in a single season, a record that is very unlikely to be broken. It’s hard to imagine that a rookie could actually be considered a ‘journeyman’, but Jose Bautista made that possible. Now that he has found a home in Toronto, Bautista has turned into one of the best power hitters in the game. |
