| MLB Player Profile: Derek Holland |
| By Sally Haase June 17, 2011 Like any 24 years old pitcher, Texas Rangers pitcher Derek Holland can be hit or miss. Witness his previous two starts. A week ago against the Minnesota Twins Holland struck out ten batters in seven and a third innings in a no decision which turned out to be a loss for the Rangers. Holland looked like a young Nolan Ryan on the mound against the Twins. Then, in his next start against the New York Yankees it was quite a different story. Holland pitched five innings giving up seven hits, six earned runs and walking five in a 12-4 loss. It was only Holland’s second loss of the season. Holland’s career numbers are decent considering that he has had about two and a half years in the major leagues. Holland spent most of 2010 in AAA Oklahoma City, but injuries to the Rangers starters brought Holland up to the team, pitching well enough to earn a spot on the Rangers playoff roster. The win/loss record and the ERA are nothing eye-popping (15-18 5.38) but the strike out total is impressive at 216. He throws hard, but can get wild, it’s all about trying to find a balance and that will be something he will learn with experience. If he does learn the balance, Holland could be the Ace of any pitching staff in the league. |
