| Oregon Shuts Down New Mexico |
| By Isiah Mungai Septemeber 5, 2010 In their first game of the new season the University of Oregon opened with a backfield that didn’t resemble their Pac Ten champions of a year ago, gone were QB Jeremiah Masoli, who is currently playing for Ole Miss, and RB LaMichael James who was suspended for the season opener. One could tell early on in this game that those two weren’t missed as new starting QB Darron Thomas overcame an early interception and along with starting back Kenjon Barner lead the Ducks to a huge 72-0 victory. Every facet of the game was clicking for the Ducks whether it was the offense which racked up a ridiculous 720 yards of total offense, the defense which held the Lobos to 107 yards of total offense and forced 5 turnovers on special teams which scored 2 touchdowns of their own off punt returns in the second quarter. After the early interception thrown by Thomas the Ducks settled down and started to showcase their impressive offensive arsenal. Having a great mix of running plays and passes they moved the ball at will, cumulating in a 28 point quarter. Barner rushed for a career high 147 yards on 17 carries all in the first 2 quarters; he also had 4 rushing touchdowns and 1 reception that went 60 yards for another touchdown in the 2nd. Thomas also played very well connecting on 13 of 23 passes for 220 yards 2 touchdowns and 1 interception. Defensive back Clifford Harris put the final touches on a 59-0 halftime lead when within a span of 5 minutes he returned two New Mexico punts for touchdowns weaving back defenders and breaking tackles to get to the end zone. While checking out other Pac 10 games its clear to see that if the Ducks can continue to move their offense the way they did against New Mexico another Rose Bowl appearance is in store for this team, and perhaps a trip to the BCS National Championship game if all cards are dealt correctly for them. |
