| Manny Ramirez Retires |
| By Sally Haase April 11, 2011 “That’s just Manny being Manny.” If the phrase is not trademarked, it should be. It was the perfect way to describe baseball superstar Manny Ramirez, no matter how he behaved with his team, there was still something that was just so loveable about him- to most people, I’m sure Yankees fans do not find Ramirez all that loveable. Major League Baseball announced Friday that Ramirez retired from the game after a nearly 20 year career. I was surprised to see the announcement from MLB, it seemed that Ramirez was excited to play for the Tampa Bay Rays and alongside his fellow “idiot” with the Boston Red Sox Johnny Damon. But the reason for the retirement was somewhat surprising, Ramirez had failed another performance enhancing drug test and choose to retire than face the 100 game suspension. It’s an embarrassing end to a great career that saw Ramirez win two World Series rings, an entrance into the 500 home run club and a lifetime batting average of .312. His defense was never anything to write home about, but his offensive numbers would likely get Ramirez into the Hall of Fame in the 1970’s or ’80’s, but with the two failed drug tests under his belt it will likely take a long time or never for Ramirez to get the Hall nod. I will miss watching Ramirez play, when he wanted to play he gave his all and more, when he didn’t want to play; you could tell. He was fun to watch because he always looked like he was having a blast both in and out of the dugout. And it was just Manny being Manny. |
