| MLB Discusses Eliminating Divisions |
| By Sally Haase June 13, 2011 Major League Baseball is in discussions as to what the league could look like in the future. One major possibility is the elimination of the division system and have a 15 team American League and a 15 team National League then at the end of the season the top five teams from each league would make the playoffs. I would guess that the top team in each league would then get the first round bye in the playoffs, but then that leaves three teams for the second round of the playoffs, maybe the top team automatically advances to the League Championship series. Oh, boy, I already have a headache, I’m not sure how this is an easier setup than the divisions. Right now the National League has one more team than the American League so there would be one National League moving to the American League. ESPN speculated last night that the most likely candidate would be the Houston Astros because it would create a rivalry with the Texas Rangers and right now the Astros are for sale and part of the sale would be a move to the American League. It may sound like a good idea in theory, and it could be great for the National League but I have a feeling for the American League that it will be the same three teams at the top (Yankees, Red Sox and Rays) while the other 12 teams battle for the final two spots. It is just going to put more of the big market East coast teams in the playoffs, great for the East teams, not so great for the fans of the Midwest and West coast teams who may never see their team make the playoffs again if it moves to a two league setup. |
