| By Sally Haase November 18, 2011 Major League Baseball has agreed to a new labor agreement this week and part of the terms of a new labor agreement are that a second wild card team will be added to the playoffs. The move will likely take place in the 2013 baseball season. Another thing that will take place in the 2013 season is the move of the Houston Astros to the American League West, giving each league 15 teams. Adding another team to the AL West will also increase the competition in that division. The moving of the Astros to the AL West adds to the natural rivalry with the Texas Rangers, but a down side for the Astros is that the team’s travel miles will be increased. I’m sure the Astros pitchers are happy about the move, with no worries about hitting they can focus on pitching. The addition of a second wild card team adds an interesting layer to the playoffs, it has not been confirmed but the consensus seems to be that the two wild cards teams will face off in a one game playoff to reach the division series. The move at least will put more emphasis on winning the division because clinching the wild card will not guarantee a playoff birth. This sounds like it is a great move for Major League Baseball. The final week of the season is going to be an exciting one; there could be several teams not only fighting to win the division but to hang on and win the wild cards too. Then if you are one of the lucky two to win the wild card, it is a win or go home situation. And if we learned anything from the final day of the season in 2011, we could be in for some classic games in the wild card play-in playoff games. |
