Injury Inspires Louisville
By Sally Haase
April1, 2013

Final game of the Elite Eight featured the number one ranked and number
two ranked teams in the region, the Louisville Cardinals and the Duke Blue Devils.
Helmed by two Hall of Fame bound coaches, the teams were sure to give us an
epic battle to end Easter weekend.  The game was back and forth until Louisville’s
Kevin Ware suffered what could have been a team breaking injury.  Gruesome
would be an understatement to describe the state of Ware’s broken leg, it was so
ugly that many news outlets have decided to not show the clip or if they do show the
clip, the break in the leg is blurred out.  It is a smart decision on the news outlets,
Ware is a student athlete and we do not need to see the possible end of a student
athlete’s basketball career replayed over and over just for the freak show appeal of
it.  The reactions of the Louisville and Duke players were compelling enough in the
nearly 15 minute delay in the game.

Good news for Ware and Louisville, the team rallied around their injured
player and dominated the second half to move on to the final four.  Ware also
announced on his Twitter that his leg surgery was a success and he hopes to join
the team for the final four games in his hometown of Atlanta.  The game really could
have gone either way before the Ware injury, but once Louisville got to halftime and
had some time to regroup and refocus, they came out in the second half and played
like a team on a mission.  Well, two missions; win the game for Ware and win the
game to stay in contention for a national title.  As for Ware, he will have a long road
of rehab and strength building ahead of him and with some luck and hard work he
will be back on the Louisville roster next season.
