| By Vinny Hardy hardyboysportsblog.com January 10, 2012 Can’t say we saw this coming. Whether you were in favor of it or not the rematch between Alabama and LSU was supposed to be another epic, intense defensive battle at the very least. These were the two best teams in the nation and things were fixing to get settled on the field. The Crimson Tide didn’t get the memo. They took LSU to the woodshed, dominating them in every phase of the game and won going away 21-0. LSU got off to a sluggish, rusty start but you kept thinking that they would get it together. They gave up a couple of field goals, no big deal, you still got the feeling that they would get their legs under them and show up and make it a game. Never happened. Jeremy Shelley’ s 23 yard field goal in the first quarter turned out the be the game winner. Alabama out gained LSU 384-92. The Tigers had an at least somewhat respectable 239 yards in the first game in Tuscaloosa. I know Alabama’s defense is phenomenal, but the #1 team in the nation had over a month to prepare and couldn’t hit the century mark in total yards. They didn’t even cross midfield until late in the fourth quarter. Even more surprising is the fact that it could have been worse, Shelley missed a field goal, and had one blocked, not saying he would have made them, but he could have. Marquis Maze pulled a hamstring with just the punter to beat or he may have taken his punt return to the house. It was an awful evening in the Big Easy, nothing went right for LSU. Jordan Jefferson looked lost, nothing was working offensively for anyone. Nick Saban cruised to his third national title personally and Alabama’s second in three years. The good news for both teams, they have a great chance to be in a similar position this time next year. Both teams are already ridiculously loaded and both have recruiting classes to die for coming in next month. The rich get richer, that’s how life is when you’re in the upper echelon of the SEC. |
