| Thank You Derek Jeter |
| By Sally Haase February 13, 2014 There have been many great baseball players to wear the uniform of the New York Yankees and the best of my generation, Derek Jeter has announced he will retire at the end of the 2014 Major League Baseball season. It will be the shortstop’s 20th season and all 20 have been with the Yankees; a rarity in this day. Jeter is sure to be a first ballot Hall of Famer, and if the baseball sportswriters have any brains at all, he will be the unanimous Hall of Fame inductee. And he should be on his numbers alone. As of now Jeter’s career average is .312, his hits are at 3,316 and if he stays healthy in the 2014 season, that number could reach or even exceed 3,500. He is a five time World Series Champion with the Yankees and was the 2000 Series MVP, he has five gold glove awards and is a 13 time All-Star, the 1996 rookie of the year and has been the Yankees captain for over a decade. The only thing missing from Jeter’s stunning career is the MVP award. Considering that Jeter can fill one of his hands with World Series rings, I’m sure he’s not too upset about never being named MVP. Jeter’s game was to get on base so the MVPs could drive him in, and Jeter did his job better than anyone in his career. Also, unlike many of his peers, Jeter was never under the cloud of PED suspicion, making his career all the more impressive. Derek Jeter is who every young baseball player should strive to be, in addition to his talent, Jeter always played the game with class and gave his all every game. You could tell from the way he played that he was not only proud to be in a Yankees uniform, he was proud to be in a baseball uniform. He had an amazing career full of great plays and unforgettable moments, I just want to say thank you to Derek Jeter for the 20 years of great baseball he has given to us fans. And to any aspiring players who hope to wear number 2 for the New York Yankees, sorry, but that will not happen. No other Yankees player will have 2 on the back of his jersey, that number will forever be Derek Jeter’s. He has earned his place in baseball and Yankees history. |
