| Twins Waving the White Flag Already? |
| By Sally Haase Dec. 4, 2012 The winter meetings have started for Major League Baseball and it is the time of year when there is a lot of wheeling and dealing going on with trades and negotiations with free agents. The Minnesota Twins are rarely major players in the winter meetings or trade talks mostly because the Twins like to stand pat with their roster and then they wonder when things don’t turn around. This year could be a different story; with returning General Manager Terry Ryan telling the press that no one in the Twins organization is safe from trades. They will listen to any trade offer for any player but that does not necessarily mean they will pull the trigger on trade offers for Justin Morneau or Joe Mauer. But if the deal is right, it could happen. Mauer will be harder to trade since his contract has a no trade clause, but if Mauer approves the trade, it happens. The Twins already made a move last week in trading away fan favorite and centerfield staple Denard Span to the Washington Nationals for class A pitcher Alex Meyer. Meyer is a big guy who throws hard and was one of the top prospects in the Nationals organization, but he is not a pitcher that the Twins will consider for the 2013 starting rotation. The Nationals get a player to help them win now, the Twins get a player who could possibly, maybe help them win two or three years from now. And we all know how hard it is to find a top line pitcher and when you do land one, you need to treat them like a precious medal in order to keep them a top line pitcher. I do trust Ryan in his moves, he is the man who built the Twins into winners in the 2000’s and many of those players were obtained by trades, but the Twins recent history with trades makes me a little weary of this move. It’s just the approach the Twins are taking this winter makes me nervous. Ever since the team’s move to Minnesota, the Twins have always made sure to keep the one player that was the face of the organization. Non-fans could look at this player whether it would be Harmon Killebrew, Kirby Puckett, or Joe Mauer and think the Twins. If Ryan trades away main pillars of the team, it shows everyone that Ryan is writing off the 2013 season and the fans may as well just pack it in for the 2013 season too and come back for the 2014 All-Star game to see some of our favorite Twins… wearing another uniform. |
