| Clean Sweep: Giants Win World Series |
| By Sally Haase October 29, 2012 DETROIT, MI— The San Francisco Giants did not waste any time in earning their second World Series victory in three years, they rode a winning streak all the way to a four game sweep of the Detroit Tigers. Going into the series, the Giants were labeled as the underdog to the American League champion Tigers, the Tigers powerful lineup was shut down by the solid pitching staff of the Giants that was led all season by game four pitcher Matt Cain. Third baseman Pablo Sandoval was named series MVP, an award he likely wrapped up in game one with a three home run performance. The Tigers had their first lead of the series in game four, but it was quickly taken away on a Buster Posey home run to give the Giants a 3-2 lead. The Tigers tied the game three all on a Delmon Young home run and that is how the score would stay until the top of the tenth when Ryan Theriot scored the eventual winning run on a single by Marco Scutaro. Closer Sergio Romo took the mound for the bottom of the tenth and sealed the win by striking out the side, the last batter being Miguel Cabrera, who looked at strike three to end the game. San Francisco celebrated and the Tigers will go back to the drawing board to make the necessary tweaks in order to return in 2013. |
