| A Change to the Home Run Derby |
| By Sally Haase July 3, 2011 The Major League Baseball All-Star game is a little over a week away and the festivities start on Monday July 11, with the home run derby. The derby is always a fun watch; the players are relaxed, with camera in hand filming the action. Most have their kids with them to watch their peers try to hit the ball over the fence. Some players are a little apprehensive about competing in the derby, thinking the homerun swing they need to use in the derby can affect their swing in the second half of the season. This season it might be a little harder to turn down an invitation to the home run derby because the invites will come from David Ortiz for the American League and Prince Fielder for the National League. Ortiz and Fielder were named home run derby captains and will hand pick the hitters for the derby. I love this idea. It gives the derby a more intense competition aspect, Ortiz and Fielder will feel they both have picked the best home run hitters they could assemble and they will want to prove it. Plus, if you have big guys like David Ortiz and Prince Fielder calling you and asking you to be on their home run derby team it is going to be really difficult to say “no”. And really, who is going to have the guys to turn either one down. Hopefully both will assemble fantastic teams and we will see some moon shots on the evening of July 11. |
