The Men’s College World Series will start in less that a week, the tickets
have been punched and the bags are being packed. Eight teams will
travel to Omaha to compete in the college world series starting Saturday
at 2pm.
The first team to punch their ticket was the Florida Gators. The Gators
knocked off Miami (FL) on Saturday winning the first two games in a best
of three series. The Gators had no problem knocking off the Hurricanes
on Friday night. It was a late rally Saturday night by the Gators to send the
game into extra innings that allowed the Gators to send the Hurricanes
home after two games.
Florida State was the next team to claim their spot in the CWS winning the
first game of the series against against Vanderbilt on Friday. Vanderbilt
was able to make a come back on Saturday forcing a game three on
Sunday. Where the Commodores eventually fell to the Seminoles 7-6.
The South Carolina Gamecocks were able to knock off the number 4
seed, Coastal Carolina winning two in a row on Saturday and Sunday.
Coastal Carolina was favored coming into the series as the number 4
overall seed. However the Gamecocks were able win the first two games of
the series, sending Coastal Carolina home.
One of the biggest surprises of this year’s super regionals was the Horned
Frogs of TCU. TCU came to Texas as the underdog and was able to
knock off the Longhorns in game one on Friday. Texas sparked a
comeback that looked more like revenge on Saturday beating the Horned
Frogs 14-1. However TCU was the one that punched their ticket to Omaha
on Sunday with a 4-1 win over Texas, sending the Longhorns home for the
season.
No surprise that the number 1 overall seed, Arizona State, will be making
the trip to Omaha. The Sun Devils didn’t have an easy time taking down
the Arkansas Razorbacks. In a game that went into 12 innings on
Saturday the Sun Devils were able to get a 7-6 win over the Razorbacks.
And again on Sunday in yet another game that went into 12 innings the
Devils were able to hold off the Razorbacks to defeat them 7-5, sending
the Sun Devils to Omaha.
The UCLA Bruins were the next to claim a spot in Omaha. The Bruins
hosted Fullerton, and in the first game of the series Fullerton was able to
hand the Bruins a 4-3 loss. On Saturday however UCLA was able to rally
back and in a 10 inning game handed Fullerton a 11-7 loss. Game 3 of
the series was held on Sunday, and Bruins easily took down Fullerton 8-1.
Sending UCLA to the CWS.
The Clemson Tigers were the next team to punch a ticket to Omaha. The
Tigers took on the Alabama Crimson Tide. First game of the series was
on Saturday where the Tide handed the Tigers a 5-4 loss. However on
Sunday the Tide was unable to send Clemson home with Clemson
handing Alabama a 19-5 loss, forcing a game three on Monday. Despite
the Tide making a rally late in the ninth to come within two runs the
Clemson Tigers were able to hang on sending the Tide home.
The final team heading to Omaha will be the Oklahoma Sooners. The
Sooners lost their first game against Virginia on Saturday. But were able
to come back on Sunday handing Virginia a 10-7 loss forcing a game
three on Monday night. On Monday the Sooners were able to shut out
Virginia 11-0 ending the Cavaliers’ season.
The Men’s College World Series will start this Saturday at 2pm ET.
