| Rosenblatt's Last Game, Also a First |
| By Melinda Dove June 29, 2010 Omaha, NE- Rosenblatt’s last game was also a first. As we say goodbye to a part of baseball history, and a place that will always hold a special place in our hearts, history was made. South Carolina has never won a national championship in baseball, as a matter of fact they have only won one national championship in any sport. That is until tonight. After losing their first game in the College World Series South Carolina was able to come back and make it to the championship game. After handing UCLA a loss Monday night, thanks in part to Blake Cooper’s pitching, South Carolina was able to win their first national championship in any men’s sport. In a game worthy to be Rosenblatt’s last, the Gamecocks came back from being behind one run. In the eighth inning Bobby Haney hit a single driving in the tying run. Neither team was able to score until the bottom of the eleventh inning. With Scott Wingo on third base Whit Merrifield came to the plate. Merrifield hit a single out to right field scoring Wingo and making the South Carolina Gamecocks champions. Looking back can anyone actually say there is a better night to win your school’s first championship? Many championships have been played at Rosenblatt and many games, players, and plays will be remembered for many years to come, some will never be forgotten. But the Gamecocks have etched themselves a place in history that no other team will ever be able to claim. The South Carolina Gamecocks were the last team to win a championship at Rosenblatt Station. So in closing as we bid farewell to Rosenblatt, The Greatest Show on Dirt, I think it is safe to say from all of us, Rosenblatt thanks for the memories. |
