| Blyleven Circled by Hall of Fame |
| By Sally Haase January 5, 2011 It was a joyous day in Minnesota and for fans of pitcher Bert Blyleven. After years of campaigning by Blyleven, fans, and peers, Blyleven has finally been elected to baseball’s Hall of Fame; and it’s about time. I cannot believe how long the sportswriters of America have ignored Blyleven’s numbers. All the shout outs, all the complete games (now a foreign concept in today’s game) and all the strike outs should have put Blyleven in the Hall years ago. In his 22 year career Blyleven put up numbers that have only been matched by a handful of pitchers. Blyleven is 5th all- time in strikeouts, 9th all time in shutouts, and is 27th all-time in wins. Up until Wednesday Blyleven was the only member of the 3,000 strikeout club and the only pitcher with 50 or more shutouts to not be in the Hall of Fame. Blyleven will likely enter the Hall of Fame as a Minnesota Twin, and it his color commentary during Twins games are any indication of his induction speech; it is going to be entertaining to say the least. Congratulations Bert! The honor is overdue, but it is better late than never. Now Twins fans will be circled by a Hall of Famer. |
