| Another Round of Conference Cannibalism Thanks to the BCS |
| By Jason Behr August 21, 2010 What a sad state of affairs for college football as more teams and conferences get sucked into the money grab that is college football. Who ever thought that PAC 10 and Big 10 expansion would have a trickle down effect to the WAC and MWC, 2 conference’s that used to be on friendly terms and saw each other as comrade in arms representing the little guys against the BCS. I don’t think too many folks or teams in the MWC blamed Utah for jumping into the PAC-10 and testing itself against the so called “big boys” of the BCS and even Boise State making the logical leap to the MWC. Especially when the MWC was in a far better spot to gain BCS Automatic Qualifier status and replace the Big East in all likely hood. Call it the little guys consolidating power. All of this got turned on its head with B.Y.U. coming out of no where wanting to declare itself as an independent in football and landing its other non-revenue sports in the WAC. I am not exactly sure when B.Y.U. started to entertain these delusions of grandeur and comparing itself to Notre Dame. In case you haven’t notice Notre Dame has been relegated to non-relevance for quite awhile now and B.Y.U. can’t exactly dream up the historic tradition and legacy of ND. This of course scared the dickens out of the MWC which saw there power play starting to crumble and with dollar signs about to fly up the chimney. They did what any other self- respecting President or AD would do and immediately tossed any regard for tradition or respect of the game out the door. All in an attempt to get a bigger piece of the pie by taking Nevada and Fresno State from the WAC and rendering that conference to the scrap heap. Of course its hard to blame these schools for following the lead of the BCS schools that float these ideals of “student athlete” and “amateurism” in a vain attempt to hide there true motives. Which of course is to make as much money as possible and as always money is the ultimate justification that can never be argued with. |
