In a 13-inning loss to the Washington Nationals, Albert Pujols led off the 4th inning
with a towering shot into the right-center seats on a 0-1 count, off of Jordan
Zimmerman, to record his 400th career home run. Pujols became the 47th major
league player to get to 400 home runs, at 30 years 222 day he is the 3rd youngest to
reach this milestone only being eclipsed by Alex Rodriguez and Ken Griffey Jr. he is
also the first to reach this mark in his first 10 years of major league ball.
In a career that started back in 2001, the 13th round draft pick Pujols has put up
stats that cannot be matched, most notably hitting 30 or more home runs in his first
10 years of service. Not only is he an outstanding offensive player but he set the
Major League record for most assists by a first baseman with 185 in 2009.
With the rapid use of steroids in this era many purest don’t put much emphasis on
this stat anymore it’s remarkable that a player who has never been associated with
performance enhancing drugs has put up such monstrous stats.
With the way Pujols has been so consistent over his first 10 years, it’ll be interesting
to see how many home runs he can have when he end his career and waits for the
call to go to Cooperstown.
