| A-Rod’s Playoff Slump |
| By Sally Haase October 14, 2012 There are now three things that we can be certain about in life; death, taxes and Alex Rodriguez’s hitting a slump when the New York Yankees get into the playoffs. Yankees manager Joe Girardi made headlines this week when he benched Rodriguez for game five of the American League division series. Earlier in the series, Rodriguez was lifted in the eighth inning for pinch hitter Raul Ibanez who went on to hit the game tying and game winning home run to keep the Yankees alive. Then, after the Yankees win game five over the Baltimore Orioles and the celebration started and the New York media had a hay day with Rodriguez, saying that he did not play in game five but he has no problem celebrating the win and advancement in the playoffs. Ummmm what? Now I’m the first to say I am not a fan of Rodriguez but to say he has no right to celebrate the Yankees victory is ridiculous. Do we tell any other bench player or relief pitcher who does not get into the game that he has no right to celebrate and drink champagne when the team moves on in the playoffs? No. And why should Rodriguez be the exception to the rule? If it wasn’t for his production during the season the Yankees would not be in the playoffs right now. But New Yorkers and the New York media have long term memory issues and remember the most recent strike out and not the career numbers or the home runs hit during the season. Rodriguez contributed more than enough during the season to earn the post win celebration and for anyone to say otherwise is just silly. It’s a tough city to play in and even tougher in the playoffs when you are in a slump. All Rodriguez needs to do is get a couple of key hits and all the bad at bats will be forgotten by the Yankees fans, and he could do it in this series, in his career Rodriguez has put his best numbers in the League Championship Series with a .303 average and 13 home runs. If not, good luck dealing with all the questions A-Rod. |
