American League Playoffs Set
|

We now know the teams involved but not the matchups yet. With each
winning last night, the Tampa Bay Rays and the New York Yankees clinched a
playoff spot; joining the Minnesota Twins and Texas Rangers as the American
League playoff teams. The Yankees and Rays have nearly identical records
with the Rays at 94-63 and the Yankees at 94-64. It is going to take the final
week of the season and maybe a game 163 to decide the American League
East. The battle for best record in the AL is still a three team race, but with the
Twins losing five straight they have fallen two games behind the Yankees and
Rays. The way the standings are right now the AL East winner will play the
Rangers and the AL wild card winner will play the Twins. Since the wild card
winner cannot receive home field advantage in the playoffs, the Twins will have
home field advantage even if the wild card winner has a better record than the
Twins.
This is the first time since 1999 that the Rangers have made the playoffs,
the Twins and Yankees are returning for the second year in a row, with the
Yankees looking to repeat as World Series champions. The Rays return to the
postseason after a trip to the World Series in 2008.
