| Gardenhire (Finally) Wins AL Manager of the Year |
| By Sally Haase November 18, 2010 Back in 2002, the Major League Baseball season had not even started yet but it was a rough off season for a Minnesota Twins fans. Twins owner Carl Pohlad offered up his team for contraction from the league. The outcry was so loud that the league backed off and Pohlad claimed that he never said he wanted to contract his beloved Twins. Managing the Twins through this contraction mess was first year manager Ron Gardenhire, “Gardy” as he is called by fans and players led the team to its first of three consecutive AL Central Division titles and it was also the start of Gardenhire’s almost yearly appearance on the Manager of the year ballot. He finished third in ’02 and has finished as runner up an American League record five times- in ’03, ’04, ’06, ’08, and ’09. 2010 was finally the year for Gardy. It was announced Wednesday afternoon that Gardenhire has finally won AL Manager of the year after leading the Twins to yet another division title and once again through injures to key starters and the team still hung on to win the division. Gardenhire was the only manager listed on all 28 ballots, his closest competitor, Texas Rangers manager Ron Washington finished in second place. Congratulations Gardy, this honor is way overdue. |
