| AL Wins All-Star Game |
| By Sally Haase July 16, 2014 MINNEAPOLIS, MN—Baseball took time to salute the Captain, Mike Trout drove in the winning run and the home stadium closer earned the save as the American League defeated the National League 5-3 in the All-Star game. Driving in the winning run earned Trout MVP honors, adding another trophy to his young yet very successful career. Felix Hernandez and Adam Wainwright were given the starting honors, both getting off to rough starts by giving up early hits. Hernandez was able to settle down and get his outs before giving up a run, Wainwright wasn’t so lucky. Derek Jeter led off for the American League and Wainwright put his ball and glove on the mound and stepped off as everyone honored one of the greats of the game. Jeter returned his appreciation by smacking a double down the right field line. By the time the inning was over the American League was up 3-0. Jeter was then replaced in the fourth inning and the fans and Jeter showed their appreciation once again with a standing ovation, Jeter then went through the American League dugout and had a moment with each player and coach. Hernandez was replaced in the second inning by Jon Lester and the National League got to him and got back into the game with two runs in the second inning, the National League then tied the game in the fourth inning with a run off Chris Sale; but that is all the National League could muster. The American League took the lead back in the fifth inning, scoring two runs off Pat Neshek, giving him the All-Star game loss. Max Scherzer earned the win, Glen Perkins the save and the American League will have the home field advantage in the World Series. |
