| 10 things gathered from the game |
| By Tyler Cox November 16 2011 1.) Marquis Teague is fast - yeah yeah, we all know Marquis Teague is fast. John Wall fast? I do not know, but in the beginning Teague was playing a little too fast for the game and his teammates. At one point in the first half Teague had 6 turnovers and 0, yes zero, assists. As the game went on he used that speed to his and his teams advantage. He set his team up for success. 2.) Davis' length on display - After averaging over 10 blocks a game in high school, Anthony Davis continued his block party in college. Davis recorded 7 blocks in last nights game, tying Perry Stevenson's single game blocks record. After 2 games, Davis is almost averaging as many blocks a game as Tyler Zeller is averaging rebounds. 3.) This team is balanced - If you try to defend UK down low they will kill you with their outside shooting with Lamb. If you try guarding the perimeter, they will absolutely have their way with player slashing and a team of Jones and Davis dunking all over you down low. If you try to guard the mid game, they will just throw it over your head for an alley oop. Kentucky had all 5 starters score in double digits. 4.) Defense could be strong point for team - yes I know they are SUPER talented on offense, I agree with you. But Kentucky held Kansas to 39 percent from the field. They caused havoc on Kansas all night leading to easy offensive positions. Honestly I didn't think Thomas Robinson really did that well against UK. Davis' blocking didn't help him much 5.) Looks as if Jones has emerged as the leader - Every time Terrence Jones made a huge play you could see the fight and determination in his eyes. He commanded respect on the court and acted like/was the floor general at times. Hot got in his teammates face and challenged them to play and be better. During the almost scuffle in the second half Jones pulled his players away from all that shenanigans going on, to keep them from fighting with Kansas players. He looked like a true leader in Madison Square Garden last night 6.) Good reason no playing tim reason for Wiltjer - Simply put, Calipari obviously thought his teams chances were better with Wiltjer on the bench for most of the game. And if you looked at the scoreboard after the game, I'd say he was right. 7.) Miller calmed everyone down - Thanks to UK playing a big team in Kansas, game is at Madison Square Garden, Kentucky being very very young and Teague trying to force the game and going too fast for everyone, someone needed to come in and slow the down the game and keep UK calm. Enter Darius Miller. Miller is naturally calm and collective as a person, so it only makes sense that, that is how his demeanor on the court would appear. It did appear and it paid dividends for UK last night. 8.) Kidd-Gilcrist, all he does is win - Now Michael Kidd-Gilchrist might not be as tough or determined as Konner Tucker, but hey, you can't deny this kid is a flat out winner. Numerous times in the game you saw (or maybe didn't see) Kidd-Gilchrist doing the dirty work and fight on every play weather it was for a rebound or a 50-50 ball 9.) Lamb can drain shots from everywhere - Lamb from the corner? It's good. Lamb with a hand in his face? It's good. Lamb from NBA range? Yep, you guessed it, it's through the basket for three. If it would be anyone on UK's team that you would want the ball in their hands needing a three Lamb is the guy. Doron really put the game away with his 3-point shooting last night, it also provided a spark for the rest of the team. 10.) Kentucky fans travel! Every supposed "neutral" game UK plays, the Kentucky fans pack the house. Last night at Madison Square Garden was no different. A report said for every Duke and Mich St fan that were there, there was 5 Kentucky fans. |
